by Chen Yonghua
The adobe wall collapsed with a gasp,
causing an old man to linger before it.
What came down with the wall
were his memories, too precious to let go.
Engulfed in his deep wrinkles
are the fall of the wall before his eyes,
and the nagging poverty year after year,
in and out of the house.
The cloud of dust from the fallen wall
settled around him.
He leans over and grabs
a handful of soil and looks at it again and again.
He looks up at the sky,
looks around himself, turns around,
and, with a shiny shovel on his shoulder,
walks towards the lush blue hills.
